Breakthrough at Science Oxford Live

Monday, 7 September 2009 5:23pm

The amazing world of scientific discovery is laid bare in Science Oxford Live’s “Breakthrough” autumn season.

From innovations of the past to the cutting edge research taking place on our doorstep right now, Science Oxford Live will host a series of events in September and October looking at the way that science and technology have transformed the way that we look at the universe. Dominic McDonald, Head of Public Engagement at Science Oxford Live, says “Incredibly, a huge amount of the most complicated work is being done right here in Oxfordshire: at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Didcot, at Culham Science Centre, and of course in the city’s two universities. We hope that this season will allow people to discover these extraordinary stories for themselves.”

The season launches on Thursday 24 September at 7.30pm, when David Ward from Culham Science Centre will explain recent research into Nuclear Fusion – a technology which has the potential to turn the way that we think about electricity upside down. Other events in the season focus on possible cures for Cancer, the work going on at the Isis Neutron Source near Didcot, and the discovery of life around “hot springs” in the deep ocean.
