Science Oxford Celebrates Website Success
Thursday, 15 April 2010 2:27pm
The past year has certainly seen some big changes for Science Oxford, and they seem to have paid off. Their online Science information portal, Science Oxford Online, has been recognised as an Official Honouree at the 2010 Webby Awards in New York.
The Webby Awards 2010 had over 10,000 entries from across the globe and this year, due to the exceptional quality of submissions, chose to recognise work exhibiting remarkable achievement that was not selected as a Nominee. Out of the 10,000 entries less than 15% are awarded the status of Honourees, and Science Oxford Online was one of them.
The website was launched in November 2009 with a new design which was in line their long term vision: Making connections between science, enterprise and society.
The website demonstrates the true beauty of science through a stunning interface filled with images representing the underlying article. Users literally explore the site using the pictures, it really is a pleasure to browse. The website interface was designed by a local creative agency called One ltd.
Science Oxford Online is an attempt to illustrate connections between different areas of Science. It also tries to show the many connections that Science has with everyday life. It is different to your usual ‘Science news’ website, because it is Science Oxford’s edited view of the world of science. The website is focused on specifically showing how science fits into everything we do, in everyday life.
Chief Executive Ian Griffin said “At Science Oxford we are passionate advocates for Science Technology Engineering and Maths. We think it is vital we inspire a new generation of science engaged citizens and we are constantly experimenting with new ways to excite people. The website has been a great demonstration of our vision for the future of engagement and we will be using some of the lessons we have learned developing this site in our future activities. Please enjoy it, and better still, get involved, tell us what you think.”
This new website has not been the only change for the organisation this year. They have refurbished their science centre, Science Oxford Live, located in St Clements in Oxford. Science Oxford Live now runs a fantastic series of evening events and hosts an interactive children’s science gallery open on Saturdays and during school holidays.
